Thanks to the MLB’s reconfigured schedule due to the lockout that delayed the season, baseball fans will be treated to a one-game showdown on Thursday between baseball’s two best teams. The AL West leading Astros will host the AL East leading Yankees, after the two just battled for four games in the Bronx last week.

That series was extremely competitive as the teams split the matchups two games a piece. It’s no surprise then on Thursday, oddsmakers are expecting a close contest.

New York vs Houston Starting Pitchers

The Yankees, who will begin the day as the favorites in the World Series odds, will send Luis Severino to the hill. Severino just faced the Astros last week, allowing three runs and five hits over 7 innings, while striking out seven.

He’s allowed three runs or less in nine of 12 starts this season, and has held Houston batters to a lifetime .247 average over 68 at-bats, with only four extra-base hits.

The Astros will counter with Luis Garcia, who’s won his last two starts while yielding just five runs and posting a 14-to-1 strikeout-to-walk rate.

Garcia, who’s struggled to keep the ball in the yard versus elite lineups this season, will have his hands full with the most potent bats in the league. He’s faced New York just once in his career, allowing three runs in 4.2 innings a season ago.

Yankees Betting Analysis

The Bronx Bombers enter play fresh off yet another sweep, this time of the Oakland A’s. New York rallied on Wednesday for it’s MLB-leading 24th comeback victory of the season, led by their version of the Bash Brothers.

AL MVP odds favorite Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton both homered, which is typically a sure sign of success. The Yankees are 25-1 all-time when the duo each go yard, and 9-0 this season.

Another win, another sweep for your New York Yankees.
They spot the A’s a three run lead just for fun only to come back again.

56-20. Aaron Judge has 29 home runs and it’s not even July.

The victory improved New York to 56-20 so far, which matches the best 76-game start in MLB history since 1930. New York has lived up to its Bronx Bombers billing, as the team has already slugged 57 dingers in June, the most by any team ever in a month.

Astros Betting Analysis

Houston meanwhile, got its 10th win in 13 games on Wednesday but it came at a major price. Star outfielder Yordan Alvarez had to be carted off the field after colliding with teammate Jeremy Pena late in the Astros victory over the Mets.

Yordan Alvarez and Jeremy Peña are both being evaluated for concussions, according to the team. They will provide an update tomorrow.

— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) June 29, 2022

Alvarez was able to walk back to the clubhouse on his own, and is reportedly being evaluated for a concussion. No further update will be provided until Thursday, but his potential absence would be a devastating blow.

The 25-year-old leads the team in batting average, home runs, RBI, OBP and slugging, while ranking first in MLB in OPS. Alvarez is hitting an incredible .434 in June, with an .868 slugging percentage and 1.390 OPS. Those stats put video game numbers to shame.

Yankees vs Astros Pick

With Alvarez potentially sitting, expect Houston to struggle to keep pace offensively with New York. Sure, the Astros combined to throw the first no-hitter against the Yankees in 19 years last week, but don’t expect the Houston arms to keep this offense at bay again.

The Bronx Bombers are fresh off scoring 22 times in their past four games, all victories, and lead MLB in runs per game, homers, slugging and OPS. Unlike most lineups who perform better at home, New York’s bats are actually more potent on the road.

The Yankees boast a better runs per game average and a higher batting average as visitors. Houston’s Garcia is a fine talent, but New York got to him in their only meeting last season, and can do so again.

Passing on baseball’s best team as essentially a pick’em against a club potentially missing their best player is not an option.

Pick: New York Yankees Moneyline (-110)
