Gov. Tony Evers (D) recently announced the agreement of a newly amended gaming compact with the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians to allow the tribe to offer sports betting at its facility.

Wisconsin sports betting is legal at state tribal casinos. It’s the fourth amended gaming compact to allow a tribe to offer sports betting since 2021.

Sports Betting at Seven Winds Casino

Evers and the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians signed a historic compact amendment to allow the tribe to offer sports betting at its casinos and affiliate locations throughout the state. The signed amendment was sent to the U.S. Department of Interior (DOI) where it will undergo a 45-day review. The DOI will either approve, deny or take no action on the amendment.

If approved, it will allow the tribe to launch sports betting in September at the tribes Seven Winds Casino in Hayward, WI. Online sports betting will also be allowed on casino property.

“I am grateful to Chairman Taylor and the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Council for their work to come to an agreement on this important compact amendment,” Evers said in a press release. “Event wagering will generate additional revenue for the state and the Tribe, while giving a boost to tourism and employment in Northern Wisconsin.”

Fourth Amended Tribal Gaming Compact

It’s the latest tribe in the state to allow sports betting. The Oneida Nation was the first tribe in the state to reach a sports betting agreement, amending its gaming compact in 2021. The Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians join the Oneida Nation, the St. Croix Chippewa Indians of Wisconsin, and the Forest County Potawatomi as tribes who have reached agreed to an amended compact with the governor.

“This is a great day for the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribe,” said Chairman Louis Taylor of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. “The amendment will allow us to continue offering a first-rate gaming experience at our casino and increase employment opportunities for both Tribal members and the Sawyer County area. I am very pleased we were able to work so quickly and cooperatively with Gov. Evers’ team to reach this historic agreement.”

Retail sports betting is legal in Wisconsin with state tribes. Online sports betting is only allowed on tribal lands.
