It’s American Football, Laddies

This is a pivotal year for Nebraska coach Scott Frost, whose salary was cut ahead of his fifth season at his alma mater. The Cornhuskers were just 3-9 last season.

Mark Whipple has been brought in as offensive coordinator. He will have a new quarterback to work with in Casey Thompson, a transfer from Texas.

Lineman Ochaun Mathias transferred from TCU to bolster an already solid defense. Linebacker Garrett Nelson is also a key cog on that side of the ball.

Northwestern also went 3-9 last season only a year after appearing in the Big Ten Championship Game.

The Wildcats are counting on improvement from returning quarterback Ryan Hilinski. They also have a 1,000-yard rusher in Evan Hull.

Lineman Adetomiwa Adebawore is a fierce pass rusher. However, he needs help from some of his teammates on that unit.

It is a little risky to lay double digits with Nebraska and Frost. The Cornhuskers, though, should be motivated to get off to a good start in a pivotal season for the once-proud program.

Pick: Nebraska -13 (-110)

2022 Heisman Longshots to Bet in Preseason

No Respect for Mora

Connecticut has long been one of the dregs of college football, but the Huskies being 27-point underdogs at Utah State seems a touch high.

Jim Mora Jr. takes over as UConn’s coach. He gives the program instant credibility after head coaching stints at UCLA and in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks.

Though UConn was 1-11 last season, Penn State transfer quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson should give the offense an immediate boost.

Utah State was a surprising 11-3 last season and played in the Mountain West Conference Championship Game. The Aggies were just 1-5 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Quarterback Logan Bonner threw for 3,628 yards and 36 touchdowns last season. However, Utah State’s porous defense – it allowed almost 400 yards a game in 2021 – makes the 27-point spread seem high.
