Sun Look to Get Back on Track

Connecticut has been one of the top teams in the WNBA this season, but it has taken a bit of a slide as of late. The Sun entered the All-Star break last weekend with a record of 5-5 over their last 10 games, resulting in them dropping from a top two spot in the league standings down to the fourth spot. On Wednesday, Connecticut should be able to get back on track as it attempts to finish the regular season and enter the postseason on a better note.

One of the strengths for the Sun this season has been the play of their front court, which is one of the more talented groups in the entire WNBA led by All Stars Jonquel Jones, Alyssa Thomas and Brionna Jones. While averaging 38.1 points in the paint (second in the league) along with a WNBA-best 12.6 second-chance points on average this season, that trio has been dominant as they come this summer.

Connecticut has both the ability to put up points offensively, averaging 83.9 points a game (third in WNBA), and the capability to lock down opponents, giving up an average of 77.8 points (third in WNBA). That combination will be a tough thing for Indiana to have to deal with on Wednesday.

Fever Are Once Again Struggling

Every WNBA team has dealt with struggles to this point in the season, but perhaps not to the extent that Indiana has. The Fever are once again at the bottom of the league standings coming out of the All-Star break, having won just two of their last 10 contests while finding themselves losers of six in a row. On Wednesday, that will likely continue with a tough Connecticut squad due up next.

Although there haven’t been to many bright spots to grab from a WNBA-worst 5-19 start to the regular season, Indiana has seen a nice showing from its rookie duo of NaLyssa Smith and Queen Egbo to go along with standouts Kelsey Mitchell and Victoria Vivians. Smith, the second overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft, is making a case for Rookie of the Year while averaging 13.2 points (second among rookies), 8.2 rebounds (leads all rookies) and 1.4 assists in 20 games this year.

Egbo, the 10th pick in the 2022 draft, has averaged 7.6 points (sixth among rookies), 6.9 rebounds (second among rookies), 1.4 blocks (leads all rookies), one assist and one steal in 22 appearances.

Keys to the Game, Prediction and Sun vs Fever Best Bet

The biggest key in the game will come in the paint and which team will be able to own in that area. Both teams have the ability to rack up the points in the paint, with the Sun ranking third in the WNBA in points in the paint (38.1) and the Fever ranking seventh (33.9).

With that in mind, Connecticut should be able to utilize its solid defense to overpower Indiana and hold off the Fever on their home court. Expect the Sun to come away with the win in Indiana to remain near the top of the league standings while extending the Fever losing streak to seven straight.

For the best bet of the game, go with Connecticut and the spread of 8.5 points. The Sun should be able to take this game with ease, likely in the double-digit range.

The Pick: Sun -8.5 (-115)
